New EU Sustainability Rules Take Effect September 27: What Hotels Need to Know

On September 27, the European Union’s Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition Directive comes into effect. Under the Directive, businesses will face increased scrutiny regarding environmental and sustainability claims made to European consumers, with greater emphasis on ensuring that such claims are credible, transparent, and appropriately substantiated. The Directive also restricts the use of sustainability labels to those based on recognized certification schemes.

Green Key Global provides independent, third-party certification that helps hotels substantiate their sustainability claims and build confidence with guests, corporate travel buyers, and other stakeholders. Green Key Global is also included on Travalyst’s list of recognized certification programs, supporting hotels’ ability to display sustainability information on online travel platforms, including Booking.com.

As expectations around sustainability claims continue to evolve globally, credible third-party certification is becoming an increasingly important tool for demonstrating transparency and building trust with travellers, business partners, and the broader marketplace.
