National Day for Human Trafficking Awareness: Joint Statement from Canada’s Hotel Associations
February 21, 2025 – On National Human Trafficking Awareness Day in Canada—and every day—the hospitality industry is united in its fight against human trafficking and modern-day slavery.

- Human trafficking happens in every region and in every community in Canada:
- In 2023, 570 cases of Human Trafficking were reported to police in Canada
- In North America, 75% of victims are trafficked within their home country
- Since the pandemic, global human trafficking detection has risen by 43%, with North America experiencing a notable increase
- Youth 18-24 account for 42% of human trafficking victims in Canada
- Women (56%) and girls (25%) make up the largest group of human trafficking victims in North America
Hotels play an important role in identifying and reporting trafficking activities. The national and provincial hotel associations of Canada are committed to supporting those impacted by raising awareness, educating hotel staff, and implementing clear reporting protocols. Together, we are creating safer spaces for all and strengthening the hotel industry’s role as a critical partner in preventing human trafficking.
This joint statement is supported by Canada’s national and provincial hotel associations, including the British Columbia Hotel Association, Alberta Hotel & Lodging Association, Manitoba Hotel Association, Ontario Restaurant Hotel & Motel Association, Association Hôtellerie du Québec, Tourism Industry Association of PEI, Travel Industry Association of Nova Scotia, and Hospitality Newfoundland & Labrador. Together, we remain committed to preventing human trafficking and supporting safer communities.
